M. What Are Lampwork Beads and why are they Different?
What are lampwork beads?
They are are hand-made glass beads. They are made using a centuries-old process called lampworking - a term which refers to the oil lamps once used to melt the glass rods. Modern beadmakers use a variety of torches, tools and glass to produce individual glass beads which may contain remarkable detail and artistry. To start at the beginning a lampwork bead is made from a rod of glass melted in the torch flame and the molten glass is wound around a specially-coated stainless steel mandrel or rod. This bead is then hand sculpted and shaped and then embellished using a variety of techniques. Once finished, the bead is placed in a kiln for slow cooling, which ensures the strength and longevity of the bead. Further cleaning and/or processing will be required before the bead is ready to be sold or included in a final piece of Designer Jewelry.
